On music’s biggest night of the year, a lot’s going to go down.

“People bring their A-game to the Grammys,” said Yahoo! music critic Paul Grein. “It’s the best people in the business, and you want to stand out. People’s minds can only absorb so many performances — there will only be one or two or three highlights in the collective memory, the rest become a blur.”

From Adele’s pretty much certain sweep to Chris Brown’s return, check out the top seven moments to watch for on Sunday:

Adele Returns

Sunday will be the “Someone Like You” singer’s first performance since vocal chord surgery sidelined her world tour. She talks about it for the first time in a “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper airing before the Grammys, saying that a mandatory vocal rest required her to communicate with pen and paper for nearly two months. She also used some cell phone apps, one of which let her swear.

“The great thing is I love to swear,” she tells Cooper. “Most of [the apps] you can’t swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I’m still really getting my point across.”

Back to that performance — Yahoo! music critic Paul Grein predicted it would be “understated and underproduced.” “There won’t be any flash or any attempt to make it theatrical,” he said. “And yet it will probably steal the show.”

Then there’s the trophies. If Adele doesn’t go home with at least four of the awards she’s up for — album, record and song of the year — it’ll be a huge upset. “She will probably win everything she’s nominated for, six awards, which will tie the Grammys record for female artist and British artist,” said Tye Comer, editor of Billboard.com.

Chris Brown’s Comeback

It’s been three years since Brown infamously beat his then-girlfriend Rihanna and plummeted in popularity. On Sunday, he’ll return to the show that preceded his assault. “I wouldn’t have bet on this three years ago,” Grein said. “His career seemed in deep trouble. Now he’s back on the Grammy stage performing, and I think he’ll possibly also win for best R&B album. He’s certainly the front-runner.”

Brown pulled out all the stops when he performed at MTV’s Video Music Awards in August, levitating above the crowd like some kind of God. Expect similar theatrics on Sunday. And hopefully, none of the insanity that happened after the 2009 awards. “If I were Chris Brown, I would just try to get through the show, have a great performance, win a Grammy, go home and breathe deeply,” Grein said.

And Rihanna’s in the House Too

The Grammys will be the first time Rihanna and Brown perform at the same event since the 2009 assault and their falling out. Neither is likely to refer to the irony. “I think that they’re going to be civil,” said Comer. “I’m not imagining that any sparks will fly. People are definitely going to be looking to see what their interaction is like, if at all.”

An Ode to Electronica

For the first time ever, the Grammys will spotlight on dance and electronic music in a genre-bending performance by Lil Wayne, deadmau5, Foo Fighters, Chris Brown and David Guetta. Then there’s Skrillex — you may not know his name now, but if this up-and-coming electronic DJ wins best new artist of the year, you’re going to be hearing a lot more of him. His hit “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” has been viewed more than 62 million times on YouTube.

“There is much more attention on electronic music this year,” Comer said. “Skrillex leads the way. He gets a lot of attention for not just having four nominations but for also being nominated for best new artist. It’s the first time that a purely electronic music producer has been nominated in that category.”

Rock and Roll Greats

It’s not often you see a former Beatle jamming on the same stage as Lil Wayne. But at the Grammys, anything goes. “Paul McCartney is perhaps the biggest living legend in rock music right now,” Comer said. “It’s a coup that they got him.”

Political candidates would feel jumpy backstage at Universal Studios this time of year. It’s a dream come true for potential glitter bombers ? gallons and gallons of multiple colors of glitter, just waiting to be dumped on unsuspecting speakers.

Of course, Universal Orlando doesn’t get political with its sparkling little plastic particles. It does liberally apply it to the floats used in its Mardi Gras parade, which returns to the streets of the theme park Saturday.

Although Universal depends on the New Orleans traditions and talent for its festival, there’s one way Universal literally outshines the Big Easy.

“Traditionally, in New Orleans, they don’t like a lot of glitter, but we really like glitter,” says Patrick Braillard, production show director for Universal’s Mardi Gras. “If you were to look at the Polar float without the glitter on it, it might look kind of flat. Once you add that glitter, that dimension, once they turn the lights on, it will sparkle.”

Universal’s designers worked with the legendary Blaine Kerns Mardi Gras World to create four new floats to join Orlando’s parade standbys such as the King Gator or the showboat. This year’s newbies salute elements of the Earth and are called Polar, Swamps and Bayous, Rain Forest and Deep Blue Sea.

The Polar entry is fronted by a large walrus discovered in the Kerns warehouse.

“This walrus is 20 or 30 years old. They recycle props year in and year out,” Braillard says. “We just saw him and he was so impressive. We had to have that walrus.”

That walrus now is coated with gold and copper glitter and accompanied by penguins and polar bears. The float also will carry snow machines along the route.

Almost a year ago, Universal workers spent a few days in the gigantic Kerns warehouse developing a theme. That’s where they found the large whale sculpture for the ocean-themed float.

Elsewhere in New Orleans (full disclosure: it was a casino), the team was inspired by a sculpture of “this gigantic flower with this enormous hummingbird,” Braillard says.

“Lo and behold, Kerns was able to provide. They knew how to build it,” he says. The hummingbird now floats in front of the Rain Forest float.

The bayou float is populated with gators, cranes and fireflies. Bringing up the rear is a shack with the sign “Miss Vicki’s Crawfish Boil,” a string of lobster-shaped lights and glittery raccoons emerging from the windows. The fishing boat is marked with the license LA 22112 MG, representing Louisiana and the date of this year’s actual Mardi Gras: 2-21-12.

Rerouted

In years past, Universal’s Mardi Gras parade started near the Jaws ride, but the shuttering of Amityville for a yet-unidentified new attraction has necessitated changes.

Look for this year’s parade to enter the park between the Horror Make-Up Show and Café La Bamba, veer right around Mel’s Drive-In and head toward New York. It will turn left onto Plaza of the Stars, passing in front of Music Plaza, then loop back to its starting point via Hollywood Boulevard.

The route is subject to change. We’ve seen it completely reverse course during the run of Mardi Gras.

This stage at the Indiana State Fair collapsed in high winds during a storm that swept through Indianapolis on August 13, 2011.

(CNN) — The Indiana Department of Labor on Wednesday announced penalties totaling $ 80,800 following a worker-safety investigation into a stage collapse last summer that fatally injured seven people and injured dozens of others before a scheduled concert at the Indiana State Fair.

The largest fines — totaling $ 63,000 for what the agency said were three “knowing violations” — were levied on Mid-America Sound Corp., which built the stage structure and leased it to the fair. Metal scaffolding supporting the stage lights fell onto a crowd of fans and workers as a storm swept through the Indianapolis fairgrounds on August 13, 2011, right before country music group Sugarland was to perform.

Mid-America Sound, based in Greenfield, Indiana, was cited for “failure to develop and implement an Operations Management Plan, the failure to develop a risk assessment plan, failure to maintain and use current engineering calculations and documentation, and failure to provide appropriate, qualified supervision,” the labor department said.

The company strongly disputed those findings in a statement to CNN Wednesday night.

The citations come as the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA) released the findings of a six-month investigation focusing specifically on employee safety standards. Two workers were among the people killed.

Labor Department Commissioner Lori A. Torres said the citations of Mid-America Sound indicated “the most serious safety violation.”

“The evidence demonstrated that the Mid-America Sound Corporation was aware of the appropriate requirements and demonstrated a plain indifference to complying with those requirements,” Torres said during a morning news briefing at the state capitol in Indianapolis.

Also, the Indiana State Fair Commission was cited for failing to evaluate and assess “all conditions and the related appropriate safety measures” at the fair’s concert venues. The “serious violation” resulted in a $ 6,300 penalty. And the local chapter of the stagehands union (IATSE) and Theatrical Payroll Services Inc. were cited for four violations and fined $ 11,500 for failing to make sure the load-bearing roof was properly secured.

State Fair Commission Chairman Andre Lacy issued a statement Wednesday saying the organization has created a new position of emergency management officer “to assist with improving emergency action plans, and completed emergency evacuation training for all employees.” He also noted that two independent investigations are ongoing “regarding the structural collapse and decision-making analysis.”

“Our hearts continue to go out to the victims and families of those whose lives were forever impacted by the events of Aug. 13,” Lacy said in the statement. “We also appreciate the due diligence of the Indiana Department of Labor in compiling its report.”

An attorney for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees told CNN Indianapolis affiliate WTHR that the state fair was making “scapegoats” of the stagehands union.

And together they killed it. Their cover of “Polly” was made last year for Spin magazine’s Nirvana Nevermind tribute issue/song compilation. Palmer’s accompanying video and single were released today.

The video for Palmer’s haunting rendition captures the essence of the Nirvana tune musically and stays true to its lyrical inspiration. (Kurt Cobain wrote the song after reading about the abduction, rape and torture of a young girl.) In the video, a tinkly xylophone ushers in the scene and minimal banjo, bass and keys add to the chilling effect. Soon, the details of the disturbing events unfold lyrically and on screen. Palmer’s stirring, whispery delivery is moving and provocative. It’s not an easy watch, but that’s likely its intent. Who needs cojones when the results are this affecting?

In “Training Day,” star Denzel Washington’s character, Alonzo, tells Ethan Hawke’s Jake, “You gotta decide whether you’re a wolf or a sheep.” As if Denzel’s status in the former category was ever questionable, fans can now definitively say the Oscar-winning actor is a wolf after his recent admission.

In a conversation with Vulture, Washington said he was waterboarded during the filming of his upcoming action-drama, “Safe House.”

“I wanted to see what it would be like. It’s strange. You can’t breathe in, because the water comes in, and it’s filling up your mouth,” said Denzel. “And that was just one time for a short time. Imagine having that done for 20, 30 seconds? You will give up the answers! You may not necessarily tell the truth, but you will tell [your captors] whatever they want to hear.”

Although Washington was quick to volunteer, it didn’t leave his director, Daniel Espinosa, feeling anymore at ease. “I was terrified, but I let him go and I had to watch him do it. He went all out for this movie. I would definitely not like to be waterboarded. It was intense. Disturbing. I had sympathetic pain. I always get sympathetic pain. I wish I didn’t. I felt like I was drowning.”

LOS ANGELES — A judge has granted Katy Perry and Russell Brand a divorce, although the pair won’t be legally split up until July.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Marc Marmaro signed the judgment Wednesday, less than six weeks after Brand filed for divorce and one day after Perry filed paperwork stating that she and Brand have agreed on all financial issues.

The exact terms of the breakup are confidential.

Brand, Perry and Marmaro all signed the judgment Wednesday, court records show. The couple will become legally single again on July 14 because California law requires that couples wait at least six months after filing before their divorce can be finalized.

The judgment calls for Perry’s maiden name, Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, to be restored.

Neither Brand, a British actor and comedian, or Perry, a pop superstar, indicated in court filings when they separated.

They were married in October 2010 in a lavish wedding at a resort inside a tiger reserve in India.

Their wedding came at a high-point for both of their careers. Brand was introduced to U.S. audiences after hosting the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and has since starred in films including “Arthur,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek.”

Perry has turned out a string of pop hits, including “I Kissed a Girl” and “California Gurls” and is scheduled to perform at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards. She has also been nominated for two awards for her song “Firework.”
